DOUG FACING DISASTER, OURS AND HIS

The selfish, self-serving, COVID anti-vaxxers continue to peddle their falsehoods and create dangerous memes, the latest of which talks about how evil the idea of a COVID passport is and how it would create a world of “us and them”, and “my rights” and other such malarkey. They speak of rights. Excuse me, as if we, the rest of the vaxxed public don’t have any.

Surely there is a technological means of creating a compassionate and efficient way of indicating who is and who is not vaccinated. While I’m not a computer chap I can’t believe there is not a program that could pull the correct info/image off of health cards.

The truth is, a COVID registration card/passport would be rather easy to produce. In Ontario every person vaccinated is electronically recorded, batch #, type of vaccine, location(s) administered, name, DOB, healthcare # etc. I presume this is the case for every province and territory. All the info, including a photo, is already captured. A tamper-proof security card will be extremely economical and easy to produce. Those who have legitimate reason to not be vaccinated can be easy to identify.

By in large we all have a photo health card and those that don’t can easily get photographed at a Provincial government services office. Those people who are unvaccinated are not eligible for a card, rather simple in the long run. Those who are caught attempting to thwart sound regulations and safety measures must face criminal prosecution. Upon conviction a fine and or prison sentence must be imposed, similar to impaired driving. Those legitimately non-vaccinated should not, and will not, be penalized in any way.

Let’s stop making excuses about the imagined rights of the “Self-Absorbed”. This cohort of true Deplorable’s seems to have neglected one key element. This collection of Zombies stumble through the pandemic, moving goal posts, posting dangerous falsehoods, attending “freedom rallies” while spreading the delta variant like Skippy peanut butter. These self-serving, reckless cockwobbles have chosen, and will chose, self every time… Rights cease at choosing to be vaccinated or not. That is entirely their choice, as are the consequences. In no way shape or form do the deliberately unvaccinated have the right to impinge on the general health and well-being of the rest of society.

Guess what!? We the vaccinated, who chose nation, others, family, friends and community over self, have rights too! We have the right to conduct commerce/shop etc. in a safe healthy environment. We have the right to decide who we let into our homes socially, commercially, and for services like contractors or servicing an air/heating unit; The right to decide with whom we socialize, including in restaurants, bars and clubs remains intact; The right to access government
services at every level in that same healthy safe environment. If any business, service, restaurant, club, bar etc., fails to enact robust COVID protection protocols, the solution is simple…Boycott them as it’s quite clear they don’t want the good and decent vast majority of Canadians as patrons. I assure you it won’t take them long to realize that sound, safe precautions are in their economic best interests.

Any government who chooses not to enact sound COVID protection policy, including COVID registration ID/ passports, will in all likelihood be voted out. The simple facts are that the vast majority of Ontarian’s, Canadians and international citizens are demanding such an ID/Passport. COVID and everything COVID related, including passports, are the election issue for the foreseeable future.

While it’s true as a nation that we have never faced as loud and pushy a cohort of massed, uneducated, uninformed, stupidity in our history, it is clear that the vast majority of Canadians hunger for, and demand, leadership on COVID. Part of leadership is making the hard decisions, decisions that may not be popular with your base.

Yes Doug Ford and Jason Kenny I’m talking about you two. Any decision related to COVID must, will and shall (three words I use deliberately, as they require action) have the best interest of all Ontarian’s, Albertan’s and Canadian’s, health, safety and general well-being as priority job number one. Failing to act in the best interest of Canadians is unacceptable to the vast majority of folks.

Refusing to have a Provincial ID to determine vaccination status will lead to political death. Douglas I get that you are not the brightest bulb in the box. Let me put this in terms even a guy who constantly cow-tows to his base can understand. Your base will not get your party re-elected. The members don’t form close to a plurality in most ridings. Most ridings, last time out, were close, for the most part, as is the case with most elections. Douglas if you keep your head anchored in the sand of your unenlightened “self-interest”, you will need to consider another career. In case you haven’t figured it out, the malleable PC/Liberal voter is done with you. You should know of course it’s those soft PC/Lib/NDP undecided voters that win elections.

Let’s be clear, your handling of the pandemic has been less than stellar. Ok let’s be honest it’s been abysmally poor. I get that you need to appease your big business donors and angry populists, aka your base. But Doug, is anybody at home? Number one there aren’t enough of them. Number two, if Darwin’s theory holds, and by all accounts it is still functioning, their ranks are shrinking due to stupidity. Number three, look at the numbers of your buddy Jason Kenny.

So just this once how about looking after the vast majority of good and decent Ontarians, even those that didn’t vote for you, whose numbers are now quite large and ready to vote your carcass out. Remember that soft vote. Right now you’re about as popular as Bin Laden at a US Navy SEALS reunion.

Catering solely to a political base, any base, is a sure prescription for political disaster. Like sent to the wood shed disaster. This was true pre COVID, and now so boldly illuminated for all to see. It might not be too late to win back some of that key soft vote. But by refusing to initiate COVID passports you will have sealed your fate as a one term premiere. The denizens of that soft vote are less than pleased with your COVID performance to date. This COVID passport, register ID card refusal caper of yours will go down as one of the greatest acts of political suicide in recent history. That soft vote are pretty done with you. This escapade will cause them to lose their raspberries.

There are times in everyone’s life where leadership matters. I mean matters, where Leadership takes courage based on wise professional advice and doing what is right. This will be the time and place where, Doug Ford, you will meet your Waterloo. Will he be Wellington/Blucher or the little Corsican Napoleon? Good advice for all of these right-wing politicians.

Never underestimate good and decent Canadians, especially when pissed off, in front of a ballot box

ANY LEFT LEFT? OR WHY I AM DISAPPOINTED IN THE NDP

By Bil Lee Prior to announcing that they would not support the Liberal budget (thus triggering an election over what was really a pretty left friendly Liberal program) the NDP in Ontario has been wasting a great deal of breath on hammering the Liberals over the "gas plant" scandal. Of course the Libs have been their old tricky and disingenuous selves in many ways and did waste a pile of money (and try to cover up how much) attempting to score some bi-election wins by cancelling the damn things. But the fact is the PC's and the NDP had both made a promise to cancel them if they got into power, so the money ws going to be wasted in any event. So it was all game playing, and pretty boring game playing actually. I am not against a solid critique of the Libs (except I continue to disagree on the utility of playing at the gas thing). My concern with role back of corporate tax breaks that Horvath has muted about as an election promise is that though I clearly support the ide...

RITUALS KEEP CHANGING by Tony Boonstra

It is interesting that since time immemorial people have developed rituals. Sometimes we forget the initial meaning of the ritual. Take Christmas. It was originally “the Mass being celebrated at the time of Christ's birth”. That is literally what the word means. What I found helpful is an idea I came across in my studies at McGill University years ago. One professor shared with us the difference between a sign and a symbol. A sign is literally what it says. So, when one comes to a stop sign there is only one meaning. Stop. No rolling stops allowed. The meaning of a symbol on the other hand, is the meaning that a community embraces. This can change over time as the community's values and belief systems undergo changes. In the Netherlands they celebrate Sinter Klaas-Santa Claus, on December 5. The celebration takes on much of the meaning of what Christmas is in Canada. There is goodwill, exchanges of gifts, celebrations, etc. Then Christmas is a quiet day for reflection and for C...

WHY DOES NATIONALISM CONTINUE TO TRUMP CLASS?

By: Jim Ward   In his less insightful moments, when he attempted to predict the future (a mugs game at any stage of history), Karl Marx predicted that eventually the awareness of class would trump that of nationalism.  He was, of course, terribly wrong in that prediction.  World War 1, known in its time as The Great War, blinded lots of good British, French, Canadian, German, American, Australian and Turkish working-class lads to the fact that their lives were much the same, selling their labour on the cheap to the benefit of the few that geared them up for war.  Women too, although not major participants in the shooting war, did their bit to ensure their male counterparts were willing to pay the ‘ultimate sacrifice’ for their god and their country.  Young women in London where ever-ready to present young men not in the shooting war with white feathers, branding them cowards , unwilling to fight for “their freedoms ”  Those Bri...
