A LAST ELECTIONPLEA TO THE USA FROM A CANADIAN FRIEND

 WAYNE JOHNSTON

NOV. 2. 2020

I’m sitting up here, in Canada, pondering as I watch the USA with genuine concern. I’m a political junkie and, in particular, I find American politics to be intriguing, particularly the two-party system. I cannot help thinking that it boxes people in politically by not allowing them to look at issues on a broader scope, creating dogged ideology. But I digress.

Dear USA, you perplex me as I look back on your history and accomplishments. What happened in the blink of an eye? You become dinner theatre for the rest of the world. I truly cannot figure out why any fair minded, decent person would vote for Trump. To me there are only a few explanations. You are rich, a racist, incredibly stupid, or you have a fetish for mendacity and like to be lied to daily, several times daily. Surely this proves that some misguided folks will vote for and support the vilest of people.

I know some of you will lose your raspberries over this, but here goes. Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party garnered 33% of the vote, propelling him to Chancellor by legal means. The rest is history. Germany was a cultured nation which had given much to the world, as it does now. Yet a cult was built, legally voted into power. A profoundly vile and evil man, who wasn’t even German, cast a spell over his cult. And once power was seized, the general population fell into line. Many of Hitler’s political strategies have been adopted by Trump including: consistent pathological lying, voter suppression, vilifying the media, racial division, threats, intimidation and the list goes on. Citizens of the USA, the world is watching. You good, fair minded, decent people, you outnumber the cult. FOR GOD’S SAKE, and for your own, if you haven’t voted, vote! No doubt, there will be mayhem and violence after the election, Trump has seen to that. Clearly Trump cares nothing for the country or its citizens, including those misguided, spell-bound, sad souls in his cult. He cares about Donald, and only Donald, as he has clearly demonstrated by his past history.

The man is ensuring the spread of the Coronavirus with his crazy rallies. Why? Because Trump and his ego crave adulation (Lee, 2020). The only way to mitigate the likely unrest is to vote for Biden and ensure his victory is resounding. A solid, convincing, Biden victory will force the GOP elders to act, as they did with Nixon, “Mr. President it’s now time to resign for the good of the nation. Sign here sir.” Yes, he will jump up and down and have temper tantrums. Perhaps a legal deal will be made so he doesn’t face criminal charges. It really doesn’t matter so long as he is gone. I do have a serious concern however; will he mobilize the right-wing media so he can make mischief? If the GOP fails to act in removing him, I’m afraid as a party, that they are done. Of course, they may very well be done in any event. The cult will remain a force and will not tolerate either a fiscally or socially responsible leader.

To those independents and you folks who don’t like either candidate, or those Republicans planning on sitting it out. I ask you to think on this: Joe Biden, who like all men has flaws, can buy the United States time and start the task of steering the country back on course. If that is all he does and it begins to bind the wounds, especially the racial wounds and injustices, his Presidency will have been a success. In time history will be kind to Biden and and his time will likely be known as America’s moment of sober second thought and, God willing, a time of healing and perhaps, strides in equality. By not voting you’re condemning your nation to four more years of villainy. By 2024 the United States will be in tatters. Domestically you will implode for a number of reasons, but mostly because of Donald and his thievery and mal governing. Geopolitically you will be reduced to having your once traditional allies stepping around you and marginalizing you. They will treat you like a paper tiger and pariah nation. You will be eclipsed as the global financial power, most likely by China. In your hearts you know this scenario to be the most likely long-term outcome of a Trump victory. So, you still have time to vote for the USA and its future.

To all you baked-in Trump folks, please know this about Hunter Biden: no one other than you believes or cares, just like they don’t really care about the voluminous number of misdeeds and criminal acts of Trump’s kids. Let’s be clear, by all fair-minded accounts, the Hunter Biden stuff has been debunked. I will however tell you what good and decent American citizens care about: number one is the Corona virus, Trumps extreme dishonesty and gross negligence in handling it. The impact has been massive, economically and socially, on all nations, but in particular on the USA. People can read and do math. The US has 4% of the world’s population but 20% plus of the world’s fatalities and cases. Figures don’t lie and liars don’t figure. Clearly, Trump is a liar of massive proportions. Even as you are reading this Trump is telling folks: “The corner is being turned.” The only thing around the corner is more COVID, more cases, more death. So yeah, folks really care about this issue. Then, in no particular order, the important issues are: healthcare, infrastructure, the environment, poverty, racial inequality and real equality for all, education, sustainable employment, a return of civility and decency in government, bipartisan cooperation, rebuilding integrity and trust in government, rebuilding relations with allies, rebuilding your country’s reputation around the world, real action to end foreign interference and a fair, unbiased judicial system. The list goes on. Maybe (but don’t count on it) at 239 or so, you might Hunter Biden. So please, in the little time left to you vote against Trump so you do not have to live in shame and regret.

Bleak Times for Trump’s USA? by Bill Lee

“If we don’t put a stake into the heart of this administration, there  may not be an election in 2028.” Gavin Newsom, Governor of California The news from the US of A about the wild and weird pronouncements and actions of the abhorrent individual sitting in the most powerful seat in the land, DJ Trump, is bleak. There is his destructive mania for imposing tariffs on every nation in the world: his corrupt attempt to block public knowledge of the truth of the sordid matter of the Epstein files; his racist hatred of Brown and Black people and his inhumane policy of arresting them willy nilly and illegally deporting many; his war on the hard won rights of women and other minorities; his ignoring of court orders (he owns a more or less corrupt Supreme Court); his impossible and unhinged comments on wanting Canada to become the 51st state of the USA; and his increasingly wacky and garbled speech, are only the most recent concerns. But probably the most dangerous of his right-wing campaig...

ANY LEFT LEFT? OR WHY I AM DISAPPOINTED IN THE NDP

By Bil Lee Prior to announcing that they would not support the Liberal budget (thus triggering an election over what was really a pretty left friendly Liberal program) the NDP in Ontario has been wasting a great deal of breath on hammering the Liberals over the "gas plant" scandal. Of course the Libs have been their old tricky and disingenuous selves in many ways and did waste a pile of money (and try to cover up how much) attempting to score some bi-election wins by cancelling the damn things. But the fact is the PC's and the NDP had both made a promise to cancel them if they got into power, so the money ws going to be wasted in any event. So it was all game playing, and pretty boring game playing actually. I am not against a solid critique of the Libs (except I continue to disagree on the utility of playing at the gas thing). My concern with role back of corporate tax breaks that Horvath has muted about as an election promise is that though I clearly support the ide...

RITUALS KEEP CHANGING by Tony Boonstra

It is interesting that since time immemorial people have developed rituals. Sometimes we forget the initial meaning of the ritual. Take Christmas. It was originally “the Mass being celebrated at the time of Christ's birth”. That is literally what the word means. What I found helpful is an idea I came across in my studies at McGill University years ago. One professor shared with us the difference between a sign and a symbol. A sign is literally what it says. So, when one comes to a stop sign there is only one meaning. Stop. No rolling stops allowed. The meaning of a symbol on the other hand, is the meaning that a community embraces. This can change over time as the community's values and belief systems undergo changes. In the Netherlands they celebrate Sinter Klaas-Santa Claus, on December 5. The celebration takes on much of the meaning of what Christmas is in Canada. There is goodwill, exchanges of gifts, celebrations, etc. Then Christmas is a quiet day for reflection and for C...
